After the school’s record-breaking Oxbridge results earlier this year, students and staff at Worksop College are again celebrating today, as 2017 A-level results come in.
With pupils achieving places at some of the finest intuitions in the country, as well as heading for vocational courses and straight into industry – Headmaster Gavin Horgan couldn’t be more excited for the class of 2017:
“We’ve seen an extremely pleasing number of places from top universities. Our pupils are always taught to strive for the best, and this is reflected in the number of places being offered at the best universities in the country.”
Ellie Simmonite, who arrived this morning with her mum, has achieved three A’s– securing a much-coveted place at Newcastle University to study English Literature.
“She’s done so well”, said mum Dianne through tears, “I’m just so proud of her.”
Nick Hobbs, 18, is celebrating his A, A, B result, learning he’s been accepted to Bristol University to study History.
Joining Worksop College from The West Bridgford School after his GCSEs, Nick said:
“Until I came here, I never would have considered myself as actually quite clever. It sounds like a cliché, but you really do get everything you need to succeed. I am the kind of person who needs a bit of a push sometimes, and the support I got was just amazing. Especially from my Head of Sixth Form, Nick Kitchen. He’s just the type of person you want to do well for!”
Joining him in his excitement is Will Hayman, 18. After his Oxford University offer earlier this year, Will’s result of three A’s means that he has secured his place to read English Literature.
And even more amazing, Will is the first person in his family to go to university.
Mum, April Hayman said:
“We’re just elated and so pleased for him. I honestly do not think he’d be here if it wasn’t for the support he’s received. Right from when he joined at Ranby House, through to now – everything has been focused on ensuring Will fulfils his potential.”
Joining Will at Oxford University is Martha Raymer. Achieving one A* and two A’s – Martha, who joined the school from Tuxford Academy for Sixth Form, said:
“I’d convinced myself it wasn’t going to happen, it’s just such a relief!”
Mum, Sally said:
“Martha is so focused and determined – and the support she’s received has just helped her achieve her potential. It’s the reason we chose Worksop College.”
Heading off to UCL is 18-year-old Sam Ratcliffe who will be studying Maths with Economics. Achieving two A*’s and one A – Sam has set his sights on a career in banking:
“I think pleased is probably an understatement! I can’t wait to get to London and get started.”
Mum Nicola said:
“I’m particularly grateful to Dr Koon, he’s been like a ‘dad at school’ for Sam.”
And adding to the school’s celebrations of success are those who are heading to more vocational courses, including Amelia Wells (B, C and a distinction for her Leith’s qualification), who is off to the school of Artisan foods, based close-by at Welbeck House.
Bethan Nicholas, 18, from Southwell joined the school in Year 13. Her A* and two B’s grades means she will be off to Brighton this October, fulfilling her dream of studying architecture.
And there is good news for staff at the school’s prep site, Ranby House – with the news that Maddie Foulds who joined in Year 3, has achieved three A* grades, securing her place at Oxford university to read French and Italian.
Mum Tessa Foulds, said:
“Maddy is the last of our three children to have attended Worksop College and Ranby House. The school has done everything it possibly can to help my children succeed, and I honestly couldn’t be more grateful."
Staff at the school are also proud to learn that the three Central St Martin’s Art Foundation offers have also been secured - with Ruby Chan, Esme Hou and Ocean Zeng all off to the prestigious art school this year.
