At Worksop College, the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award is more than just a programme - it’s a transformative experience that empowers pupils to challenge themselves, explore new horizons, and build lifelong skills. For Hristiyan, a Year 13 full boarder from Bulgaria, the journey has extraordinary.
After completing his Gold Duke of Edinburgh Award in August last year, Hristiyan was invited to attend the Gold Award Celebration at Buckingham Palace, hosted by HRH The Duke of Edinburgh himself. It was a proud and emotional moment - not only for Hristiyan but also for his mother, who joined him for the occasion.
“I went to Buckingham Palace after I got an invitation from HRH The Duke of Edinburgh to attend the Gold DofE Award Celebration event,” Hristiyan explained. “This was after I completed my own DofE journey following years of determination, volunteering, skill-learning, as well as completing two expeditions in the Peak District.
“The amazing thing was that I could bring a guest with me, and I chose to share this moment with my mother - the person to whom I owe the majority of my success. Seeing a member of the royal family was exciting, but witnessing how proud and joyful my mum was truly melted my heart.
“I even got the chance to briefly speak with the Duke himself. When I told him I was from Bulgaria, he was pleasantly surprised - as were the people around me.”
Hristiyan credits his involvement in DofE to Major Simon Payne, Contingent Commander and DofE Manager at Worksop College:
“It’s Mr Payne who I have to thank for introducing me to the award, and for the care and passion with which he approaches the initiative. He truly inspires young people to be proactive.”
Major Payne reflected on Hristiyan’s journey and the wider impact of DofE at the College:
“Joining the DofE at Worksop College has been one of the best decisions Hristiyan made. It’s more than an award – it’s about discovering new skills, making lasting friendships, and pushing yourself beyond your comfort zone.
“As an international pupil, it helped him feel part of a community and really connect with others. Whether you're hiking through beautiful countryside or volunteering locally, every part of the journey brings people together. The DofE truly is a life-changing experience – and here at Worksop, it’s also a brilliant way to explore, grow, and create memories that will stay with you for life.”
From the rolling hills of the Peak District to the gates of Buckingham Palace, Hristiyan’s DofE story is a powerful example of what can be achieved through commitment, curiosity, and courage. At Worksop College, we are proud to support our pupils as they take on challenges, celebrate milestones, and discover their potential - wherever in the world they come from.
