A lesson learnt! Whilst standing in the middle rank in the CCF waiting to be inspected, a chum offered me sixpence to turn the wrong way. Sixpence would buy me a Mars Bar, so I did it. I was given a day’s extra parade.

Later that day, after another small misdemeanour, I was given another day’s extra parade - whereupon I said, “As everyone is so generous, why don’t you give me a week?” They did!

I had to wake the master in charge every morning in battle dress; at break time, I had to report to the RSM in battle dress; and at lunch, I had to go to the Captain of School - also in battle dress - all for a week. I have never forgotten this!
