Greater independence, with the right support

One of the things that appealed most to all three pupils was the balance between independence and support.

For Sophia, staying at Worksop means having greater responsibility for her own academic progress while still being able to make the most of the wider opportunities available to her.

“I felt that the newfound independence would allow me to take ownership of how I progressed academically.”

Harry similarly values the freedom that comes with Sixth Form, particularly the opportunity to manage his own time.

“Having multiple free periods gives you more responsibility for managing your own time and deciding when you need to work, just like at university.”

For Bella, that independence comes alongside a strong support network.

“The Sixth Form at Worksop gives you responsibility for doing your own work and independence while maintaining a high amount of support from teachers.”

It is a balance that feels particularly important at Sixth Form: pupils are trusted to take greater ownership, while knowing that teachers are there when they need them.

Challenged to achieve their best

For academically ambitious pupils, staying at Worksop also means continuing to learn in an environment where teachers know them well and are invested in their progress.

Harry says his teachers “really push you to aim and achieve the top grades”, while also providing the support needed to get there.

“They don't allow you to coast to an easy grade, instead they push you to aim high, and support you when doing it.”

Bella describes the academic experience in a similar way, calling it “supportive yet challenging”. Smaller classes mean teachers can respond to individual needs, while specialist clinics provide further opportunities to ask questions, consolidate learning and prepare for exams.

For Sophia, that individual relationship with teachers has been important throughout her time at the College. Regular tutorials helped her stay on track at GCSE, giving her the confidence to take greater ownership of her academic progress in Sixth Form.

Looking beyond A Levels

For all three pupils, Sixth Form is also about preparing for what comes next.

Sophia is aspiring to attend Oxbridge and says the College's Academic and Professional Enrichment Clinic (APEC), alongside initiatives such as the Worksop College Diploma and Electives, has given her confidence that she will have the guidance she needs.

“The pressure of entrance exams and interview preparation already feels more manageable.”

Bella also highlights the Sixth Form tutor system, where pupils have an individual tutor to support them throughout the university application process.

Alongside their A Levels, the pupils are able to explore subjects beyond the curriculum through Electives and other super-curricular opportunities, helping them to develop their interests and think more broadly about their future.

Why stay?

For Sophia, Harry and Bella, choosing to stay at Worksop College was about more than familiarity. It was about knowing the people around them, understanding the opportunities available and feeling confident that the Sixth Form could give them the academic challenge, independence and support they need for their next step.

And while their ambitions are different, their reasons for staying have much in common: strong relationships with teachers, greater independence, individual academic support and opportunities to go beyond the A Level curriculum.

As Sophia puts it, she is looking forward to becoming even more involved in College life and encouraging younger pupils to “take advantage of the breadth of resources available to them”.

For these pupils, Sixth Form is not simply a continuation of their time at Worksop. It is an opportunity to build on what they have already achieved - and prepare confidently for what comes next.
