STEM CLub & An Evening Under the Stars

Science Clubs

This calendar year our Science department has been engaging pupils in physics, chemistry and biology both in and out of the classroom – in addition to pupils lesson time, we have numerous clubs throughout the year.

Recently our Year 9 and 10 pupils (Megan, Max and Lewis) were engineering structures to withstand an Earthquake. Pupils also predicted the Earthquake magnitude that they felt their model would withstand up-to.

It turns out all buildings survived and exceeded their predictions! Excellent Engineering.

Before the spring equinox, we had ‘An Evening Under the Stars’, a night, with pupils, parents and teaching staff getting together for an excellent evening of estimating star distances, calculating the speed of rotation of the sun, comparing telescopes, pupils teaching parents the maths of angular separation and distance estimations and many more exciting astronomy related activates!

During a recent biology lesson, pupils explored biotic and abiotic features of a freshwater ecosystem in our pond - collecting samples and identifying the organisms found.

As well as classroom learning, we believe in hands-on lessons, bringing scientific theory to life, developing observation, analysis and enquiry skills in a real-world environment.
