130 Stories: David Godden

Attending Worksop was a truly transformative experience upon which I reflect fondly - and frequently - some 50 years later. Arriving as a nervous and cautious 13 year old and departing five years later much more assured  confident and resilient.

There are so many memories: all-day Saturday cricket matches; ‘school will watch’ rugby matches; the CCF Band beating the retreat on Speech Days; the Headmaster’s Call Over; larger-than-life staff members, mentors and role models; hugely competitive House matches. I could go on!

One outstanding memory lingers, even all these years later. As the final act of every term, some 400 voices in the Chapel would sing ‘God Be With You ’Til We Meet Again’. Sung only at the end of term, I have therefore sung this hymn only sixteen times in my life – I have never heard it in any other place or at any other time. Yet its words and melody have never left me; its sense of belonging and comradeship, and the crescendo of the final verse before leaving the Chapel – always, for some, for the final time at Worksop – remain vivid. I last sang it in December 1977, and can recall it now. I hope the tradition continues – it is a unique Worksop College experience.
